While being on vacation is amazing, packing for vacation isn’t quite as much fun. Figuring out what you need, how much you need, and how to fit it all in your car can be a real hassle. To help make the whole process a little easier, Mountain Country Cabins has put together four packing tips for anyone staying at our Murphy North Carolina rentals:
1. Know the Forecast
Obviously, when you take your vacation will determine what sort of clothes you will pack. Murphy is beautiful all year round, but each season offers very different weather conditions and temperatures. Before you leave for your trip, check the forecast for the week of your vacation so you know if any unseasonably warm or cold weather is predicted. Also, it helps to know the average highs and lows for each month:
January: 49 °F, 26 °F
February: 53 °F, 29 °F
March: 61 °F, 34 °F
April: 70 °F, 41 °F
May: 77 °F, 50 °F
June: 83 °F, 59 °F
July: 86 °F, 64 °F
August: 86 °F, 63 °F
September: 80 °F, 56 °F
October: 71 °F, 44 °F
November: 62 °F, 35 °F
December: 51 °F, 28 °F
2. Don’t Overpack When it Comes to Clothing
There can be a temptation to bring your entire wardrobe with you on vacation, but that simply isn’t practical. Instead, try to minimize the amount of clothes you pack by following these strategies:
- Only bring one pair of jeans. This also goes for khakis and other trousers.
- Bring clothing that is easy to layer.
- Choose outfits that are comfortable for exploring nature and the town but can be dressed up for a night out.
- Try to pick clothes that coordinate well with everything else you’ve chosen.
- Choose clothes that pack compactly.
Also, remember that all of our Murphy North Carolina rentals come with washers and dryers, so you can always do a load of laundry during your trip.

3. Be Prepared for Hiking
Murphy, North Carolina is near some wonderful trails that you will definitely want to hike during your visit. When you head into the woods, make sure that you have the following items:
- Comfortable and sturdy shoes
- Refillable water bottles
- Maps of the trails you will be hiking
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Granola bars, trail mix, or another high protein snack
- Compass
- Binoculars
- Extra socks (in case you step in a puddle)
- First aid kit
- Flashlight with backup batteries
4. Pack Like a Pro
While bringing the right clothes and other items is crucial, the actual act of packing can be just as important. When done correctly, you can fit a lot more in one suitcase than you might think!
One great technique for maximizing space is rolling your clothes. To do this, simply fold the article of clothing to make a rectangular shape, and then roll the item into a cylinder. If you’re afraid that your clothes will unroll, you can use rubber bands to keep them in place.
Another way to save space is to pack travel size toiletry items. We recommend putting all of the small bottles in a Ziploc bag so you don’t lose track of them.
