More than just a highway, this peaceful roadway offers a unique experience you cannot find anywhere else. Here, you and your family or group can enjoy a slow-paced and relaxing drive through a countless number of long-range mountain vistas and picturesque landscapes. With views like this, it is no wonder it is considered to be “America’s Favorite Drive.”

2. Cherohala Skyway

For nearly 20 years, the Cherohala Skyway has been one of the most popular scenic drives near Murphy. Not only does this route take you through the Cherokee National Forest, but it also guides you through the Nantahala National Forest as well.

In total, the route is just over 40 miles long. Meaning, it is the perfect way to spend a relaxing afternoon driving around the scenic beauty of our area. There are also several unique stops along this scenic drive, including the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest.

We especially love touring this route during the fall when the leaves have changed from their usual greens to vibrant shades of red, yellow and orange. It is as if the sides of the mountains are set ablaze with beauty for as far as the eyes can see.

Please note, this roadway is susceptible to icy conditions during the winter. You may want to check the local road conditions before heading up this route if you plan on exploring during the winter months.

If you love winding mountain roads, then you are sure to love touring The Tail of the Dragon, also known as Deals Gap. Consisting of over 300 twists and turns, this roadway is perfect for guests who enjoy scenic beauty with a touch of adventure.

When you have finished making your way through all of the twisty bends, you should swing by the cafe located at the top of the mountain for a delicious lunch or a light snack. There is also a fun souvenir shop where you can pick up a commemorative t-shirt or mug to remember your experience on The Dragon. There is also a gas station here if you need to fill up before heading back to Murphy.

Don’t forget to exercise caution as you wind your way up and down the mountain along The Tail of the Dragon. It is important you and your family or group stay in your own lane as you drive because many of the turns are blind and it will create a safe driving experience for you and other travelers.
