1. Hike the Trails
One of the most popular things to do in the North Carolina mountains is to hike the trails. Deep Loop Creek Trail is an easy hiking trail with a roundtrip length of 4.9 miles. You’ll enjoy walking beside the mountain creek, over footbridges, and through the woods. Whiteoak Branch Trail is a 1.8-mile trail and is known for having a ton of rhododendrons in the spring. If seeing wildflowers is one of the top things you want in a hike, you should take Kanati Fork Trail, which is about 4 miles roundtrip. Wildflowers and plenty of historic buildings can be found on Mingus Creek Trail, a moderate 5.8 mile hiking trail. There are plenty of options when you want to get out in the mountains!
2. See a Waterfall
If you want to hike to a waterfall, there are plenty of trails for that too! Tom Branch Falls is just a short walk, about 0.6 of a mile. This waterfall is about 80 feet tall. Indian Creek Falls is an impressive waterfall you’ll want to see. The roundtrip length to the falls is about 1.9 miles. Along the way, you’ll see all kinds of wildflowers in the spring. The waterfall is about 45 feet tall. The hike to Juney Whank Falls is short too. You just have to walk about 0.5 mile roundtrip, and you walk on a footbridge to really see the 80-foot-tall waterfall. Seeing a waterfall is a great thing to do in the North Carolina mountains!
3. Take a Drive
Want to enjoy the mountains from the comfort of your car? There are plenty of scenic drives you can enjoy in the North Carolina mountains! The most popular, and arguable the most beautiful, is the Blue Ridge Parkway. It spans 469 miles, going through the mountains, small towns, and providing plenty of places to stop. Newfound Gap is another great scenic drive. This road connects Cherokee, North Carolina to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. You’ll find plenty of great stops along the way, such as Clingmans Dome.
4. Go Fishing
Love to fish? Then fishing is a great thing to do in the North Carolina mountains! The first thing you need is a valid fishing license from North Carolina or Tennessee. You can fish any time during the year. Specifically in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, you can fish 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. You’ll find lots of fish, from trout to smallmouth bass. Fishing is a great activity for families, especially if you want to spend time outdoors.
